6 injured in Lake Martin explosion involving unpermitted fireworks
TALLAPOOSA COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — Six people were injured when a pontoon boat that was modified into a fireworks platform malfunctioned at Lake Martin on Friday night, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

The malfunction caused an onboard explosion, which happened around 9:14 p.m. and involved unpermitted fireworks. It happened near the Kowaliga Basin in Blue Creek in Tallapoosa County.

Two people who were injured were transported to UAB Hospital. One victim was taken to Lake Martin Community Hosptial for treatment. Three victims arrived at area hospitals because of their injuries.

The ALEA State Bureau of Investigation Hazardous Device Unit and Alabama Fire Marshal’s Office were notified of the explosion. Special agents rendered the found unexploded fireworks safe.

The fire marshal’s office is the lead investigating agency for the fireworks part of the investigation into the explosion. The ALEA Marine Patrol Division is involved in the investigation.

The ALEA urges people to never launch fireworks from a boat unless they received specific permission and are equipped with proper safety measures. It stated to avoid firing over crowded areas, marinas and boats. The agency advises people to not swim in areas where fireworks are being launched.
