According to the Beloit Police Department, gas utility Alliant has been notified of the issue and is responding.
The Rock County 911 Communications Center said they have been told the cause is an odorant leak, and the odor is traveling very far.
“Due to the thickness of the air, currently the smell is traveling further than normal,” the agency said.
Natural gas has no smell, and utility companies add an odorant to alert residents of a potential leak.
