(WHTM) — After years of partisan disagreements, lawmakers slipped parts of the farm bill into the “One Big, Beautiful Bill.”

Rep. Glenn Thompson (R-15), who chairs the House Agriculture Committee, said Pennsylvania farmers will especially benefit from the six-year farm bill.

“The Agriculture Committee had its own title within the ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill,’ and the agriculture title really was transformational,” Thompson said.

The bill includes provisions for two of the state’s biggest agricultural products, dairy and poultry, Thompson said.

Lawmakers raised the Dairy Margin Coverage, allowing farms to use the highest production year from 2021 to 2023 as a new enrollment baseline.

The bill also requires USDA to spend $233 million per year on animal disease prevention and response. Thompson said that investment will help farmers protect their flocks from high pathogenic avian influenza, known as bird flu.

Farmers can also expect an extension to USDA’s Livestock Indemnity Program and other disaster assistance programs.

Thompson said the bill invests in references prices, crops prices, trade programs, specialty crops and animal disease prevention.

The Pennsylvania Farm Bureau applauded the bill’s passage on Thursday.

“The passage of the ‘One, Big Beautiful Bill Act’ ensures American families continue to have access to a safe and abundant food supply,” said Chris Hoffman, president of the bureau.

But not everything could make it into the bill, Thompson said, particularly items not eligible under the reconciliation process. That includes rural economic development such as broadband, a challenge to California’s Proposition 12, hemp regulations and the elimination of SNAP’s so-called poverty cliff.

“That’ll be farm bill 2.0,” Thompson said.
