DERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WHTM) — While work continues on the new Pennsylvania State Police academy for cadets, its fuzzier officers are also getting new quarters.

The sprawling complex includes housing for mounted patrols and K-9 units. The current stables house up to 30 horses in 26 straight stalls.

It’s safe to say they can’t wait to move into their new place.

“These guys [are] getting their very own box stall, which are going to be 14 by 14 feet, which is going to be great for these guys,” said Sgt. Carrie Neidigh, with the PSP Tactical Mounted Unit. “And automatic water, so they’re going to be living in luxury out of the new stables.”

And trotting on some prime ground. In total, they’ll have more than 50 acres of pastures. The new grounds will also have grass instead of hay.

The K-9 Unit can also expect a sweet new pad.

“Right now, we’re just working out in our patrol areas and doing trainings in areas we can find and work as a unit to get these trainings accomplished,” said Trooper Ryan Ivancik, with the K-9 Unit.

The unit has 12 drug detection dogs, seven explosive dogs and one human remains dog.

The kennels will be housed inside the Bureau of Emergency and Special Operations Building, which is expected to open by spring 2026.

Ivancik said he looks forward to the new facility, new kennels and maybe some new training areas.

If all goes as planned, the mounted unit should move into its new stable complex by the end of this month.
