A Sandy City sea of red, white, and blue on display this Fourth of July

SANDY, Utah (ABC4) — A sea of red, white, and blue for the 4th of July—you can take a stroll through America’s past with a patriotic showcase in Sandy. Hundreds of flags are on display, each showing off a piece of history.

“26 Different flags that our nation has had as official flags, like a 20-star flag, a 24-star flag, 48 stars, and then the 50-star flag that we fly.” Colonial Flag Owner Paul Swenson told ABC4.com. “Now, some flags only flew for one year. some flags flew multiple years like the 50-star flag was for, you know, 60 plus years.”

Unwrapping the red, white, and blue flags to put up for display is the Colonial Flag team, a local flag making company.

They are setting up 250 flags on seven foot flagpoles for Sandy City.

A “this year in U.S. history” flag tag is on all the stars and stripes, showing what it looked like back then. The 1896 flag is a big deal—it’s the year Utah became the 45th state.

This shows the unity of our country over 250 years, and so I think it’s good for the families that come through here, the youth who come through here, to know that we’ve had our challenges,” Swenson said.

The 4th of July display will stay up until July 7th.

“You could walk from the 1776 flag and sneak your way through the whole field,” Swenson said.

Here’s more information on the display from Colonial Flag.

“Colonial Flag is partnering with Sandy City to celebrate 250 years of American Independence with our 250 Years of Independence Flag Field displayed over the 4th of July Weekend south of Sandy City Hall.

“Each year of America’s history will be represented by the official flag of the United States flown. Each flag will also have a tag explaining the most impactful events in American history that year, and in the center of it all will be a Declaration of Independence display, made with a carefully remastered version of the document that allows people to read Thomas Jefferson’s famous words in his original handwriting.”

You can check it out at South of Sandy City Hall at 10000 S. Centennial Parkway, Sandy, UT.
