WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — A bipartisan bill to ban “trigger leads” in the mortgage industry is gaining momentum on Capitol Hill.

The Homebuyers Privacy Protection Act, which has already passed the Senate, aims to stop credit bureaus from selling consumer data to lenders after a mortgage inquiry, often resulting in a flood of unsolicited calls and messages.

Supporters said the measure would protect buyers’ privacy and level the playing field for lenders.

If approved by the House, the bill could become law later this summer.
