A 911 caller described the crash as a “really bad accident,” SRPD said.
A white Chevy sedan and a red Ford sedan were involved in the crash and underwent major damage (photo below). The drivers of both vehicles were taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
According to police, the Chevy was going westbound on Fountaingrove behind the Ford. The Chevy “suddenly accelerated at a very high rate of speed and struck the back of the Ford, sending both vehicles into spins and causing collisions with trees that lined the roadway.”
It is still unclear why the Chevy accelerated, but early findings reveal that the elderly driver accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake.
Fountaingrove Parkway was closed for about four hours as police investigated the crash. It has since reopened.
