Police tactical units surrounded an apartment building along Meadows Drive for several hours, urging a suspect to surrender peacefully. The standoff started after police were called to investigate the first of two shootings at the apartment complex overnight.
Just before 4 a.m., neighbors awoke to the sound of gunfire at the West Village of Avondale Meadows apartments. That noise is, unfortunately, not uncommon for the area.
“There’s normally a lot of shooting over here and it scares my daughter. Even though she’s a teenager, it does scare her and a lot of the kids over here,” said neighbor Cleo Mason.
When officers arrived they found one person shot and wounded.
Police initially thought a second victim had suffered a graze wound, but that turned out to be unfounded.
Although the reason for the shooting remains unclear, police detained multiple people for questioning.
As officers were wrapping up that investigation around 9 a.m., they heard a volley of gunshots from another building in the same complex.
“It’s deeply concerning that gunfire would erupt not once but twice in this neighborhood. It’s unacceptable. We need to do better as a community,” said IMPD Officer Drew Brown.
No one was hurt in that second round of gunfire and one person was quickly detained.
Police initially believed a second suspect barricaded themself inside one of the apartments. That led to the police standoff which ended quietly when no one was found inside.
So far this year, the number of non-fatal shootings has gone down significantly across Indianapolis.
In fact, the numbers on the same date have trended down for several years in a row, but preventing violence is a daily fight that takes everyone doing their part.
“Public safety is a shared mission between us and the community. We can’t do it alone. We need the community to step up and say no to this type of violence,” said Brown.
Police said at least one firearm was recovered at each of the two scenes.
So far, it does not appear the two incidents are connected aside from their location.
