“They’re very dangerous…. They’re basically fireballs that are airborne,” said PGFP spokesperson Alan Doubleday.
The department held a fireworks safety demonstration at its training facilities on Wednesday, featuring various fireworks collected from residents, showcasing the different types that could be found across the county.
The department’s bomb squad prepped small explosives to simulate the damage done by firecrackers, detonating items such as watermelons and raw steak to show the dangers surrounding the activity.
“We encourage all of our residents, if they see someone with fireworks in hand, to call 911. You know, policing that is very difficult, without the community,” Doubleday explained.
Hefty fines will also be issued for those in possession of illegal fireworks.
“It’s $1,000 fine for each device that you may possess,” Doubleday said. “We’re not going to support the use of any fireworks in Prince George’s County.”
The department encourages anyone with illegal fireworks to surrender them to local fire departments without facing a penalty.
