BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — For the past three weeks, the University Lakes Project construction has been underway.
The goal is to give Baton Rouge residents a safe place to walk, bike, and boat.
Rob Stewart, Chairman of Project Management, said that without the project, the lakes wouldn’t survive.
“A couple of years ago when it was really hot, we saw how low they had gotten. We had a lot of growth coming in, and so they are all being deepened,” said Stewart.
However, the project brings major changes and adjustments to nearby neighborhoods and roads.
May Street is key to the project due to major landscape improvements.
“You’ll have a bridge over it, the road will be moved more towards the middle so it won’t be right on the edge of the lake, but with that, you will have bike paths and walking paths on either side of the lake,” said Stewart.
These upgrades aim to make the lakes safer and more accessible for visitors on foot or by bike.
The project is expected to be completed by December 2026.
