New Shawnee County roundabout partially opens to traffic on Friday

SHAWNEE COUNTY (KSNT) – Local road work crews will be partially opening a new roundabout north of Topeka this week.

Shawnee County spokeswoman Amanda Monhollon said in a press release that phase one of the Northwest 46th Street and Northwest Greenhills Road roundabout will partially open to traffic on Friday, July 4.

Monhollon said drivers will be able to travel north, east and south through the newly constructed roundabout. The west leg of Northwest 46th Street, from the roundabout to Highway 75, will stay closed as construction continues in the area.

Drivers are encouraged to follow posted detour routes and use caution in the area as crews and equipment will still be active on the west leg of the project.

“This phased approach allows for improved traffic flow while continuing critical construction work west of the roundabout,” Monhollon said. “We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation as we work to improve road safety and infrastructure in northern Shawnee County.”

The end goal of the project is to establish a new roundabout and center turn lane, provide safety improvements to the area and put in a 5′ sidewalk and 10′ multi-use path. The project is part of the 2017 half-cent sales tax program and consists of four phases with the last set to end in the fall of 2026.
