According to Chicago police, the incident unfolded at a gas station in the 1200 block of South Independence Boulevard, in North Lawndale.
Officers said the victims, a 36-year-old woman and a 7-month-old girl, were at a gas station at the time the alleged theft occurred.
Police said the woman had gotten out of her car and was standing near the vehicle when a 38-year-old man approached before he entered her car and fled the scene with the baby in the back seat.
Authorities caught up with the man shortly after the alleged theft and safely located the baby.
The man was taken into custody and charges against him are currently pending.
After locating the little girl, officers said she as taken to the hospital for observation.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
