Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett signed a proclamation on Thursday, celebrating the impact that the Indiana Fever, and the WNBA as a whole, have made on the city this year.
This comes after Hogsett signed a proclamation last month, declaring “Blue and Gold” days in the city of Indianapolis to celebrate the Indiana Pacers’ playoff run.
Indianapolis will host the 21st WNBA All-Star Game on July 19, marking the first time the city will host this particular league showcase. The events will include the game, along with the WNBA STARRY 3-Point Contest and the Kia WNBA Skills Challenge on July 18, as well as WNBA Live, a two-day interactive event combining the league with culture, music and fashion.
This season, the Indiana Fever has continued to show success. The Indianapolis-based team won the league’s Commissioner’s Cup on Tuesday evening, defeating the Minnesota Lynx 74-59. Two Fever players, Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston, will also be significant contributors to the All-Star festivities, serving as a team captain and All-Star starter respectively.
In his proclamation, Hogsett showcased those successes, as well as how the Indiana Fever continues to “shatter attendance records and drive unprecedented interest in women’s basketball.”
Ahead of the WNBA All-Star festivities later this month, Hogsett encouraged Indiana residents to show their Fever pride this month, letting flags fly, wearing jerseys and participating in upcoming community events, according to the proclamation.
“Not only will women’s basketball fans get to see some of the best athletes go head-to-head in the All-Star Game, Skills Challenge and 3-Point Contest,” Hogsett said in the proclamation, “our city’s Downtown, in the heart of basketball country, will be filled with artwork, activations and celebrations of the game we love.
“Never, ever forget, in 49 other states, it’s just basketball,” Hogsett continued in the proclamation. “But this is Indiana.”
