San Jose District Councilmember Bien Doan announced on Wednesday that the new pilot program employs Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to “gather video evidence and intelligence.” The program supports law enforcement in issuing citations against property owners illegally using fireworks through the Social Host Ordinance.
Only permitted public fireworks displays are allowed in San Jose, which boasts nearly one million residents.
“This is about using smart, efficient technology to keep our neighborhoods safe,” said Councilmember Doan. “Illegal fireworks are more than just a nuisance — they’re a danger to public safety. With this pilot program, we can take a proactive and data-driven approach to enforcement, while minimizing disruption to the community.”
The drones were unanimously approved this past February by the San José Public Safety and Finance Strategic Support Committee to be implemented during key times, starting with the Fourth of July weekend.
“The initiative aims to reduce fire hazards, prevent injuries, and protect both residents and first responders during one of the most high-risk times of the year,” added the news release. “The use of illegal fireworks is subject to citations and fines, and now — with the support of drone technology — enforcement efforts will be more targeted and effective.”
