Dozens turned out Wednesday evening for the community walk in Oxon Hill at the intersection of Iverson Street and Southview Drive, including Precious Barnes, who lives in Oxon Hill.
“We live on a very busy street, so I am concerned about speeding, and concerned about playgrounds for our children, so those are the issues I want to speak to our leaders about,” Barnes said.
This was the fourth community walk hosted by Councilwoman Krystal Oriadha.
“We are doing another community walk and our goal is to be in the heart of the community and talk to our residents about the issues and concerns they are seeing and what we can do better to give them the resources and support they need,” Oriadha said.
According to the Prince George’s County Police Department, crime report in the past seven days, officers have investigated 12 robberies, 26 assaults and four carjackings in the county.
Residents like Cynthia Rudolph, who is the neighborhood HOA director, are hoping to reduce the crime numbers by coming together to address the problems.
“In terms of the crime, we live close to an apartment complex and we are also close to the D.C. Maryland line,” Rudolph said. “Crime is always an issue because we are an open community.”
Councilwoman Oriadha said many others have concerns about: streets that need repair, trash in the community.
“Sometimes we get lots of calls about potholes, and maintenance issues and overgrown grass. And keeping the community clean and public safety making people feel like there is a police presence,” Oriadha said.
Oriadha is planning to have another community walk later this year.
