WRBL News 3 spoke with Deputy Chief of Operation Daniel Macon who confirmed that eight units responded to the fire at the vacant church on the corner of 24th Street and Veterans Parkway around 9 p.m.
The fire led to Veterans Parkway between Talbotton Road and 29th Street being shut down, while crews battled the blaze.
An unidentified man was also rescued from the fire and was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
“We started conducting defensive operations, we found the need that we had to breach the structure to make a quick rescue,” Macon recalled. “We stopped defensive operations and coordinated that rescue, once the rescue was conducted we went back to defensive operations.”

Macon also told WRBL that none of the 22 firefighters that responded to the scene were injured.
The church has had a previous fire about a year ago.
