Gaspar Dzul Canul, 28, was arrested on suspicion of over 15 burglaries and/or hot prowls, the San Francisco Police Department said Tuesday. A hot prowl burglary is one that takes place at a residence or building that is occupied by people at the time.
On May 28, just after 12:30 a.m., officers responded to a possible hot prowl burglary in the 1500 block of Funston Avenue. Canul was detained near Lurline Street and Funston Avenue, and investigators believed he was the suspect in several other cases with similar circumstances.
Police officers alleged that Canul had damaged and attempted to make entry into two separate residential garages. Investigators used video surveillance to tie Canul to another burglary at a separate location days prior.
Police believe Canul is responsible for an additional 13 hot prowl cases. The department also alleges that since Canul’s arrest, there has been a “drastic” decline in hot prowl burglaries.
Canul was booked into jail on suspicion of attempted burglary of a residence, hot prowl burglary of a residence, grand theft, and possession of burglary tools. He is being held without bail.
