Proposed Alabama bill would expand DUI penalty

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) — A proposed Alabama bill would expand the time a driver must have a working ignition interlock device in their car if they are convicted of driving under the influence for the first time.

Rep. Barbara Boyd, D-Anniston, is co-sponsoring HB1 with several other House members. Under current law, a person who receives their first driving under the influence conviction could have their 90-day driving privilege or driver license suspension stayed if they have an approved ignition interlocked device operating in their car for 90 days.

If passed, HB1 would require the approved ignition device to be operating for six months. HB1 also removes the option for a person to stay their 90-day suspension. It would become effective October 1, 2026, if enacted.
