More money, certain leaf blowers banned, among new laws in the DMV

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The start of July means new laws have gone into effect across the DMV.

July 1 means tipped workers in the District will see their minimum wage go up to $12 an hour from $10. Non-tipped employees will see their hourly pay increase to nearly $18.

“Living in this city is very expensive,” said Norvena Turay. “So I feel like you need that money to live comfortably.”

Leaf blowers are still allowed in Montgomery County, but gas-powered ones are now banned.

County leaders approved the ban in 2024, along with the sales of them, to protect people’s health and the environment. Violators will be fined $500.

“I’m more interested in housing prices, you know, schooling, things of that nature, versus what’s taking up these leads. But I guess they know best, right?” said Deaundre Webb.

Virginia is cracking down on how people travel in cars. Every adult must now wear a seatbelt, regardless of whether they’re in the front seat or back seat.

“That’s very important, all about safety,” said Isaac Ellsworth.

Another new Virginia law makes it a felony to place a Nazi swastika on someone’s property, or public place, without permission, in order to intimidate people.
