Learning how to make “Fireworks in a Bottle” for kids this 4th of July

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — With the Fourth of July just days away we thought it would be fun to learn some fun holiday-themed science experiments with the kids from STEM NOLA.

WGNO’s Kenny Lopez learned how to make “fireworks in a bottle.”

STEM NOLA’s Senior Program Coordinator Devin Floyd and 8-year old kid scientist Nadia Gaines are teaching us how to make the “fireworks in a bottle.”

Gaines said, “First you’ll need some antacid, Alka-Seltzer and we are going to need food coloring.”

You mix food coloring, Alka-seltzer, oil and water together in a bottle.

“We added water to stretch out the food coloring to act as a catalyst, so the Alka-Seltzer can have more water to react with,” Floyd said.

He went on to say, “This is a fun activity because these are the types of things you can find at home and it’s easy to get, and it’s a fun way to do science and create something that looks cool.”

“It looks like how a sprite can would be with the bubbles coming up, but the bubbles are a different color,” Gaines said.

Plus if you’d like to learn how to build mini-rockets and watch them blast off then STEM NOLA will be hosting “Rocket Day” at UNO’s Lakefront Arena on Saturday, July 12. To register.
