OPELOUSAS, la. (KLFY) — Opelousas Residents in Carrington Place are hoping for assistance as the potholes and damages to the road all throughout their neighborhood are causing damage to their cars and preventing even the mail from being able to pass.
Ronald Onezine has lived on this street for 3 years and said it continues to get worse as potholes get deeper and more common.
“It’s definitely breaking the cars.” Onezine said. “I just spent $1,500 dollars on my front end. My wife just had to spend another $1,300 or $1,400 dollars fixing the whole front end and the rear.”
Onezine and his neighbors said the privately owned roadway has not received enough attention from the owner and now leads to extensive damages to vehicles and safety concerns.
“He has come in here, digging ditches out, and he takes the mud out of the ditches and put it in the hole. It’s not fixing the road because if you’re putting the mud in the hole and we ran through it, we still splashing the mud.” Onezine said.
To see just how bad the conditions were on the road, News 10 drove one of our news units down the street and experienced the bumps and potholes firsthand. We also collected footage along the way.
With school buses and mail trucks refusing to come down the roadway, and emergency responders struggling to maneuver around the potholes, Onezine hopes something can be done to repair the roads before the damages get any worse.
“I would just like to ask the government, or the councilmen of St. Landry Parish to help us out in this neighborhood.” Onezine said. “At least try to get him to fix it. The emergency purposes is the main thing. If something happens bad back here, you can’t get to it.”
Onezine said he has reached out to the St. Landry Parish courthouse and the council. Courthouse employees told Onezine it will be a civil issue due to the fact that the road is privately owned rather than being owned by the city or parish.
