HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — More law enforcement could soon wear body cameras in Pennsylvania.
The State Senate unanimously passed a bill Thursday that would authorize the use of body cameras by special agents with the Office of Attorney General, rangers with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and officers and deputies with the Pennsylvania Game and the Fish and Boat commissions.
Current laws on the books do not permit officials from these agencies to use body-worn cameras.
“As body camera technology has evolved, so too must our laws,” said Sen. Lisa Baker (R-Luzerne), who sponsored the bill known as S.B. 520.
She added the expansion would benefit officers who often work in remote locations while providing an objective record of their interactions with the public.
Under the bill, each entity has to demonstrate a need for body-worn cameras and a capacity to implement a responsible program. It also consolidates body camera authorization under the Wiretap Act.
It would be the largest expansion of body cameras in the Commonwealth since 2017, when former Gov. Tom Wolf signed legislation that allowed officers to record audio inside of homes and eliminated a requirement that officers announce to everyone in a public space that they are being recorded.
“Body cameras have proven to be a critical tool to protect law enforcement and the communities they serve,” said Attorney General Dave Sunday, who backed the legislation.
The bill now heads to the House for consideration.
