AUBURN, Ala. (WRBL) — Starting July 7, pedestrians at Toomer’s Corner will have to scramble to cross the street.
The City of Auburn will begin testing their new “x-crossing” traffic pattern at the intersection of College Street and Magnolia Avenue. The new pattern will allow pedestrians to cross in any direction, including diagonally, while vehicle traffic is stopped.
City officials say the x-crossing is often used in heavy pedestrian traffic areas and will allow more people to cross in one cycle.
When the new phase begins, all vehicle traffic will get a red light. Pedestrians will then be given a crossing signal in all directions. Once that phase ends, vehicles will be able to drive as normal and all pedestrians will have to wait for their next signal.
No vehicles will be allowed to turn right on red when the new traffic pattern begins.
City engineers will be monitoring the intersection to see if additional changes will be needed. The city asks for citizens to use extra caution and be patient during the traffic trial period.
