FRISCO, N.C. (WNCN) — A man visiting North Carolina’s Outer Banks died Monday while swimming in the Atlantic Ocean near Frisco, Cape Hatteras National Seashore officials said.
According to a news release, a 67-year-old man from Nanuet, N.Y. was swimming in the ocean just east of Cape Hatteras National Seashore’s Ramp 49 “without flotation.”
He was seen floating “face down in the water” by a bystander, and a 911 call was received by first responders at 2:51 p.m.
The man was brought out of the water and onto the shore by other beachgoers. They, along with Hatteras Island Ocean Rescue staff, performed CPR but were unable to resuscitate him.
Officials said there was a moderate risk for rip currents in the surf in Frisco Monday, but “rip currents were not observed in the area surrounding this incident.”
In addition to lifeguards, staff from Dare County Emergency Medical Services, as well as Cape Hatteras National Seashore Rangers, also responded to the call.
“Cape Hatteras National Seashore extends our condolences to the victim’s family and friends,” National Parks of Eastern North Carolina Superintendent David Hallac said.
