NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — If you are looking for a fun Fourth of July activity to do with your kids, how about making “fizzy fireworks?”
WGNO’s Kenny Lopez thought it would be fun to meet with STEM NOLA, which engages kids through science, where today they are showing us a holiday themed experiment, which really pops!
Devin Floyd is STEM NOLA’s Senior Program Coordinator while 10-year-old Emeline Rosenbach is one of their kid scientists.
“Today we are making fizzy fireworks and all you need is a film cannister, an antacid tablet, and some water,” Rosenbach said.
Rosenbach explained that first you take the water and fill the film cannister a third of the way, and then you take the antacid tablet, then close the lid, and make sure that it is sealed, then you turn the film cannister upside down, and then take a step back and wait to see what happens.
“The antacid tablet makes a gas and when the gas is mixed with water then it will make a pop,” she said.
“The pressure from that builds up so much in the cannister and with nowhere to go, but to pop up,” Floyd said.
You can then add food coloring to put on your own grand finale “fizzy fireworks” show.

STEM NOLA will also be hosting a “Rocket Day” for kids in grades K-12 at UNO’s Lakefront Arena on July 12 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. To register.
