PANGUITCH, Utah (ABC4) — Utah’s largest wildfire is now 61% contained and has consumed 33,276 acres so far, according to the latest information from the U.S. Forest Service- Dixie National Forest.
In an update
Firefighters say they will continue backhauling and increasing containment in the days to come.
Crews gained containment on the entire northeast edge of the fire on Monday. They will continue to monitor the line and remove hazard trees in that area.
In the area of the Little Bear Fire footprint, firefighters monitored the progress of the fire and noted a gradual reduction in fire behavior that is not threatening the line. They say they will continue to patrol the area today.
Weather and fire restrictions
Officials say with continued monsoonal influence on the weather, crews will focus on mop-up and strengthening the line to continue increasing containment. They are also on standby for any initial attack needs in the event of dry lightning hitting the area.
A red flag warning will be in effect today from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. throughout the fire area due to the continued risk of outflow winds and increased chance of dry lightning. These conditions are expected to be in place through Thursday.
A Stage 1 Fire Restriction Order has been issued across Utah, which means no open fires of any kind except within established facilities are permitted.
All lands within the boundaries of Bryce Canyon National Park, Dixie National Forest, Color Country BLM District and Paria River BLM District are in a Stage 1 Fire Restriction.
Bryce Canyon National Park, State Route 12 and Highway 89 continue to remain open.
