SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) — CHRISTUS Health is urging everyone to practice fireworks safety for the Fourth of July.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), more than 14,000 fireworks injuries in the U.S. were reported in 2024. “We often see injuries that are completely preventable,” said Dr. Greggory Angier, trauma medical director at CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System. “No matter your age or experience, fireworks can be unpredictable. It’s important to remember that safety should always come first.”
CPSC reported that sparklers were among the top fireworks that resulted in a visit to the emergency room. The item reportedly accounted for about 1,700 injuries last year, posing a serious risk, especially to children.
Dr. Angier suggested that people keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby in case they need to extinguish fires quickly. He also noted that launching fireworks, such as mortars, rockets, or multi-pack kits, should be placed on a stable, flat surface to prevent tipping or erratic movement.
Angier said with a few precautions, families can enjoy the holiday without a trip to the emergency room.
