TOPEKA (KSNT) – A Topeka church is getting ready to distribute thousands of pounds of food to local families in need early in July.
Kathy Deitering, volunteer chair with Harvesters food distribution, said families are invited to stop by a big food distribution event at the Kansas Neurological Institute (KNI). The church, alongside Harvesters Community Food Network, will be distributing about 30,000 pounds of food at no cost to families who show up.
“People have to eat and groceries are so expensive,” Deitering said. “Even people that used to have… an adequate income are finding difficulty just putting quality food on the table. So, it’s a blessing to be able to put it together and share it with people who need it.”
Deitering said the food distribution will happen at about 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 3 in a drive-thru format at the east entrance of KNI off Southwest 21st Street and Southwest Randolph Avenue. Food will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.
“If you would like to receive food, go to the stop light at the intersection of SW 21st and Randolph Streets, turn south and follow the signs,” Deitering said.
People who want to volunteer for this food giveaway should show up by 8:30 a.m. on July 3. You can learn more about volunteer opportunities with Harvesters by clicking here.
