CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Four members of the Charlotte Fire Department received the state’s highest civilian honor on Monday for their heroic efforts during the Shannon Park Shooting in April 2024.

Governor Stein presented engineer Justin Barringer, firefighters William Costello and Johnathon Moore, and Captain Nathan Jones (in absentia) with The Order of the Long Leaf Pine while he was in Charlotte speaking about workforce development.

Fire Chief Reginald Johnson accepted the award on Jones’s behalf since he could not attend the ceremony.

“These firefighters entered a situation that most would run from,” Gov. Stein said. “Their heroic actions will not be forgotten.”

Moore had only been at Station 15 a few months before that April 29, 2024, tragedy. “I learned more in those eight minutes than I had in my entire career,” Moore said.
