GASTON COUNTY, (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Finding a way to keep their son’s legacy alive while dealing with the loss. A local nonprofit in Gaston County is spreading good cheer all in the name of Gio.

This golf tournament comes at a tough time, as two weeks ago was the anniversary of Giovanni Zappitelli’s death- the four-year-old died after a pool accident.

Gio’s father, Anthony Zappitelli, told Queen City News in a previous interview that it’s tough dealing with Gio’s death, but they want to make sure they honor Gio every day. The family started the Gio Foundation, a nonprofit to help children in Gaston County and surrounding areas.

Sunday night started what organizers hope to be an annual two-day golf tournament and auction. The event is one to inspire others, and family members say a chance to see the smile of the four-year-old that brought energy, love, and joy to the world.

“He only had four years here on this earth,” said Jamie Baird, Gio’s aunt. “But our plan is to carry on his name, carry on his legacy, and let people know who he was so his name never fades.”

The inaugural event finishes up with a golf tournament and lunch. Organizers tell me they raised over $100,000 Sunday night, and it’s money that will go to help pay for camps, start online classes, and the upcoming 2025 Christmas toy drive.
