California fire department tests futuristic aircraft that could transform rescues

No runway? No problem.

The San Bernardino County Fire Department demonstrated a cutting-edge aircraft last week that could revolutionize rescue operations—and potentially save lives.

It’s called an eVTOL rescue aircraft. eVTOL stands for “electric vertical take-off and landing.”

While SBC Fire hasn’t purchased one yet, they’re seriously considering it. The aircraft could provide paramedic support in difficult terrain—think hiker rescues, mountainous regions, and remote rural areas.

The technology is similar to what’s being developed for air taxis. A pilot sits in a pod, and the aircraft lifts off vertically—no runway required.

Video provided by SBC Fire shows the demonstration, featuring a model from the company Pivotal. The footage captures the pilot entering the cockpit, which includes a viewing screen and dual joystick controls.

Shawn Merrick of SBC Fire said the department is evaluating the technology and considering an investment. “The demonstration highlighted the potential of eVTOL technology to dramatically reduce response times and overcome traditional barriers like traffic congestion, natural terrain, or rural distances,” he said.

The aircraft has a range of 20 miles and a cruising speed of 63 miles per hour. It’s also amphibious, capable of taking off and landing on both land and water. According to Pivotal, the aircraft represents 14 years of design, development, and testing.
