300 tons of illegal fireworks seized so far in 2025 in California

(FOX40.COM) —Over 600,000 pounds of illegal fireworks have been seized in California so far in 2025, Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office said.

That is more than double what Newsom’s office said has been seized on average annually over the last 10 years.

The confiscations were the result of a joint effort between CAL FIRE’s specialized arson and bomb investigators and local and federal authorities.

“Already this year our Arson and Bomb Investigators, along with our partners, have successfully seized over 600,000 pounds of illegal fireworks from all over California,” State Fire Marshal Daniel Berlant said. “Our recent enforcement efforts clearly demonstrate our zero tolerance toward the use, transportation, and possession of illegal fireworks. Even ‘Safe and Sane’ fireworks are banned in many communities and bring large fines for their illegal use.”

According to the governor’s office, fireworks have caused over $35 million in property damage across California since 2024, including sparking 1,230 fires.

“We all must do our part to keep Fourth of July fun and safe. I ask all Californians to use common sense and practice safety when lighting fireworks to celebrate,” Newsom said. “Our message is clear: illegal fireworks won’t be tolerated, and you will be prosecuted. They run the risk of starting dangerous fires in the peak of our fire season.”

The sale, possession or use of fireworks that don’t have the “Office of the State Fire Marshal Safe and Sane” seal is illegal, Newsom’s office said. The penalty for violating the law carries fines up to $50,000 as well as up to a year in jail.
