RIVERTON, Utah (ABC4) — A Riverton man and convicted felon has been arrested after allegedly shooting at and injuring a member of his ex-girlfriend’s family in Riverton on Friday evening.
According to a probable cause statement, Tyler Michael Collins, 34, went to his ex-girlfriend’s house after shooting at another vehicle where another woman was doing her makeup. Collins reportedly was paranoid after the incident and tried to figure out a way to flee.
When Collins arrived at the residence, he encountered the father of the ex-girlfriend who refused to give Collins any information regarding her. The two men got into an argument as the father began taking pictures of Collins’ car. The father then called 911 to report the incident, which is when Collins pointed a handgun at him.
Collins then drove down the street, turned around and parked down the street from the home, approaching the house on foot. As he approached the home, Collins was running directly toward the father with a gun and began rapidly firing. Collins fired a total of 11 rounds, with one of the rounds or shrapnel grazing the father in the head.
The ex-girlfriend’s brother, aware of the situation, retrieved their own firearm and began firing at Collins, who retreated back to his car while still firing. Collins then left the scene and went to a residence in Taylorsville, where he began arguing with a family member and brandished his gun at another person who tried to intervene.
Collins then left that scene but was eventually located in his vehicle and was safely taken into custody. After being transported to the Herriman Police Department, Collins reportedly assaulted two officers after they tried to handcuff him to a pole in the interview room, headbutting one and kicking another.
Collins was eventually taken to the Salt Lake County Jail and booked on ten counts of Felony Discharge of a Firearm, a third degree felony, and one count of Felony Discharge of a Firearm causing serious bodily injury, a first degree felony.
