(WHTM) — The Shapiro Administration is sending a warning about a recent scam targeting Pennsylvania SNAP users.
Scammers have been calling SNAP users and directing them to provide their identity, or their account will be closed, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS). There is an automated recording saying, “Thank you for calling the PA EBT Customer Service. Enter your card number.”
Phone numbers the scammers are using include: 888-273-6954, 844-239-5136 and 888-592-8936.
If you see these numbers pop up on your phone, the DHS wants you to be aware that it is not them, and you should never share your card number or any personal information.
“DHS will never ask for personal information in an unsolicited text message, email, or phone call. If someone is claiming to be from or affiliated with the Department and they are asking you for your personal information, it is a scam,” Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) Secretary Dr. Val Arkoosh said. “Please do not fall victim to identity theft. If you ever receive a suspicious call asking you for information about your benefits, please inform the DHS fraud tip line immediately so the proper authorities can investigate. I also encourage people to use our new card lock safety feature on the ConnectEBT app or website that allows you to lock your EBT card when not in use to protect your SNAP and Cash benefits from skimming and theft.”
The DHS does use the number 1-833-648-1964 to send those who receive SNAP, Medicaid and any other benefits texts or calls.
What the DHS does not ever ask from users are details about a person’s benefits, a request for specific personal info, or links to unofficial sites; most texts will take users to a dhs.pa.gov, COMPASS, or site that ends in .gov or .org.
