BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Hoosier Trails Council, Scouting America, has appointed Randy Saunders as its new Scout Executive, bringing more than 20 years of experience in youth development, outdoor education, and leadership to the role. His appointment became effective June 1, 2025.
Saunders will oversee Scouting operations across 18 counties in south-central Indiana, where the council supports more than 130 units and thousands of youth and volunteers. He most recently served as Scout Executive for the Southern Sierra Council in California and has also held professional Scouting positions in Florida and New Mexico. A lifelong Scout and Eagle Scout himself, Saunders has worked at Philmont Scout Ranch, one of Scouting America’s premier high-adventure bases.
“This is a remarkable Council with a rich history and a bright future,” Saunders said. “I’m honored to join the team and eager to work with our volunteers, staff, and community partners to expand the reach and impact of Scouting in Southern Indiana.”
Council leaders praised Saunders’ experience and vision at a time of strong growth and opportunity.
“We are excited to have Randy join the Council at this pivotal time,” said Council Commissioner Art Haldeman. “His prior experience will help us focus and execute on our initiative to grow our membership and provide Scouting to more youth in our service area.”
Council President Jeff Wuslich noted recent milestones for the organization, including a $1.2 million legacy gift and an application for a major Lilly Endowment Inc. grant to enhance the Council’s 640-acre Maumee Scout Reservation, located in the Hoosier National Forest.
“We had 64 Scouts earn the rank of Eagle last year alone,” Wuslich said. “Randy is the right leader to build on this progress and guide us forward.”
As Scout Executive, Saunders will serve as the Council’s full-time chief professional officer, managing day-to-day operations, leading staff, growing membership, supporting volunteers, and driving key capital initiatives—including the continued development of the Maumee Scout Reservation.
One of Saunders’ goals is to expand access to Scouting in the region. “Our vision is to make sure the Scouting adventure is available to all young people in the 18 counties we serve,” he said. “We aim to increase the number of Scouting groups by 30% this fall, bringing Scouting to more families.”
