PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A man suspected of burglarizing marijuana dispensaries in Portland and Bend allegedly tipped off authorities of his ties to the crimes during a recorded jail call, court documents allege.
Court documents filed Thursday in Multnomah County Circuit Court show 27-year-old Michael Kessler now faces several charges including burglary, aggravated theft, criminal mischief, unauthorized use of a vehicle, possession of a stolen vehicle, felon in possession of a firearm, felon in possession of body armor and unlawful possession of methamphetamine.
According to probable cause documents, on June 25, a Portland police officer helped the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office and US Marshals with a search warrant for Kessler’s home along Southwest 26th Avenue, in connection to a marijuana burglary in Bend.
The officer then wrote another warrant to obtain property related to an ongoing marijuana dispensary and warehouse burglary investigation, court documents note.
While searching Kessler’s home, authorities reported finding guns, meth, six packs of sealed lottery tickets, a black vacuum-sealed bag with marijuana on the kitchen table, boxes with several hundred pre-rolled blunts, two sets of body armor and a stolen motorcycle.
The warrants came as authorities reported around 24 dispensary burglaries in the Portland metro area since January 3.
According to the officer, the burglaries involved multiple suspects wearing masks and gloves who broke into businesses by ramming vehicles into buildings to gain entry or by using tools to break in.
A variety of vehicles were used in the burglaries, including a non-plated white Audi Q7 and a black Chevy Tahoe, authorities reported, noting the Audi and Chevy were allegedly used in the Bend burglary and in another dispensary burglary in Portland, which led to $15,000 and $20,000 in stolen products with damage to the business likely exceeding $1,000.
Surveillance video from the Portland burglary showed the Audi and suspects using a pry bar and a sledgehammer to break into the dispensary, court documents allege, adding that authorities found a black hoodie with a skull helmet seen in the footage, inside Kessler’s home during the search warrant.
On June 22, Portland police reported a burglary on Northeast Marx Street after an officer received a text message from one of the business owners. The business owner described three vehicles involved in the burglary, with one vehicle ramming the business’ electric fence while the other two rammed the side doors of the building. The business owner notably described one of the suspect vehicles as a red Ford Ranger, court documents say.
Investigators learned that a Portland police officer had also conducted a traffic stop on June 22 involving Kessler shortly before 12:30 a.m., with Kessler driving a red Ford Ranger, court docs allege, stating Kessler was pulled over just after the burglary.
A key moment during the investigation came after authorities noted Kessler’s May 30 arrest for an unrelated charge, which led to his booking in Multnomah County Detention Center.
According to probable cause documents, Kessler made a recorded jail call in which he mentioned giving the person on the other end of the line the “Q7.”
Authorities also reported an Audi Q7 was parked at Kessler’s apartment, with authorities finding a roll of foil in the car, which was used to cover license plates in some of the burglaries. The investigation also tied Kessler to the Chevy Tahoe, court documents allege.
Court documents also noted authorities spotted a stolen Dodge Ram parked in front of Kessler’s home on June 24. The truck was later pulled over with two passengers inside, and authorities reported seeing marijuana inside the truck in plain view.
After searching the truck, authorities reported finding black vacuum-sealed bags matching the bags found in Kessler’s home, court documents state.
Authorities reported that the driver said he got the truck from a man known as “Looney Toon,” or Looney John Franklin Toon, who was recently indicted for allegedly shooting at Milwaukie authorities.
