People can find community at Clovis’ Mayweather Boxing and Fitness

CLOVIS, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Mariana Tukia didn’t walk into Mayweather Boxing and Fitness expecting to fall in love with it.

“I think I really just wanted something else, a different way of moving my body, and so I signed up for boxing and I ended up loving it,” Tukia, who started taking classes a few months ago, said.

A certified weight trainer herself, Tukia was just looking for something different, but she found so much more: community, confidence, and a daily challenge.

“So I’m in the 50, you know, club, which means that if you take 50 classes within your first 90 days, then you’re in the club, meaning you get a free shirt and then you get your picture on the wall, and that was part of the reason why I started coming every day,” Tukia said.

Mayweather Boxing and Fitness opened in Clovis in 2021 and offers high-intensity, full-body workouts designed for every fitness level. The gym features a team of five coaches,
with photos of professional boxer Floyd Mayweather on the wall.

“You’re going to get a full body workout, five rounds of boxing, three rounds of fitness, and it’s beginner friendly, anybody can come in here and do whatever they want,” said owner Kenny Wiggins.

Wiggins knows what it takes to go the distance. The former NFL player and Fresno State Bulldog brought the brand to the Central Valley after retiring from football.

“I fell in love with boxing when I was training,” Wiggins said. “It was a lot of fun to do a different kind of workout rather than just a football workout; it correlates really well with football in the position that I played.”

Now, nearly four years in, the gym is open seven days a week.

For those who may be nervous about stepping into the gym, clients say go for it.

“I think gym intimidation is such a real thing, especially when you’re so uncomfortable in your own body,” Tukia said. “I think just trying a new thing out, I always say, if it’s scary, do it anyway, do it scared.”

For these 5 a.m. groups, it’s not just about throwing punches, it’s about showing up for yourself and discovering what you’re capable of.
