PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) — No charges are being brought against the police officers who shot and killed a man at a senior home in Woodbridge a few months ago, officials said.
The Prince William County Police Department (PWCPD) said the incident happened on April 26 at the Westminster at Lake Ridge retirement community, located in the 12100 block of Clipper Drive.
Two officers responded to the scene for a man “in crisis.” He was holding a knife inside an apartment and approached the officers with it.
The officers gave commands to the man, but he did not listen. He began to attack a 91-year-old woman, prompting officers to shoot him. He died there.
After a thorough evaluation, Commonwealth’s Attorney Amy Ashworth determined that the officers involved in the deadly shooting would not be charged.
PWCPD’s Office of Professional Standards will conduct a separate and internal review, and then the department’s use of the Deadly Force Review Board will conduct the final review to see if the shooting was “justified and within policy.”
