NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY)- The community came together for a walk in support of a family who lost their loved one to gun violence last year.
Lamarcus Daniels, 35, was shot and killed in a shooting in New Iberia on Lafayette Street in October of last year. New Iberia Police located Daniels in the front yard of a residence with gunshot wounds. Daniels was pronounced dead at the scene.
Family and friends of Daniels, along with community members, participated in a walk that started on Lafayette Street and ended on the corner of Dale and Ann Street.
Daniels’ mother, Tina Daniels, spoke about the day her son died still remains an unforgettable memory.
“Yeah it’s almost a year,” said Daniels. “October 28th gonna make a year that my baby is gone, I still remember it like yesterday.”
Daniels said this isn’t the first time someone in her family lost their live to gun violence, as she said her cousin, 18-year-old Rylon Daniels, was also a victim of gun violence at this year’s New Iberia Spanish Festival.
“We lost my other lil’ cousin recently at the festival that was here a couple of months ago in New Iberia on Main Street,” said Daniels. “He had a future, basketball, sports, in his life, and his life is gone.”
Daniels said while she is still grieving over the loss of her son, Lamarcus, she is grateful for the memories they shared. She said she hopes the community will put down the guns once and for all.
“My life changed since this happened to me,” said Daniels. “I just hope and pray we can all come together as one, like we used to back in the day, cause all this got to stop.”
Daniels spoke about how she hopes that by doing this walk, others who’ve lost loved ones to gun violence can also begin the healing process.
