Second person charged in connection with child’s shooting in Joliet

JOLIET, Ill. — A felony charge has been filed against a Joliet man in connection with the shooting of a 5-year-old boy by another child last month.

According to Joliet police, 38-year-old Amin Hudson, who lives in the residence where the shooting unfolded, has been charged with a felony count of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.

The charge stems from Hudson’s alleged role in the shooting of a 5-year-old boy by an 8-year-old boy inside a Joliet residence on May 15.

Police said the shooting, which is believed to have been accidental, occurred inside a residence in the 500 block of Dover Street just before 12:15 a.m. that day.

An initial investigation indicated that the victim’s eight-year-old relative found a handgun in a bedroom of the home and shot the boy, striking him.

It was initially reported that the child had suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen, but an update from police indicated that he was shot once in his arm.

Following the shooting, the child was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center, where he was then airlifted to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition.

In an update shared Friday, Joliet police said the child has since undergone several surgeries and is now doing well.

Police say it is believed that Hudson’s gun was used in the shooting.

Hudson was taken into custody on Thursday after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Hudson, who had previously been convicted of delivery of a controlled substance, is the second person to be charged in connection with the shooting.

According to police, 62-year-old Denise Hudson was charged with one count of endangering the health and life of a child following her arrest on Saturday.

Authorities said Denise Hudson was babysitting the children at the time the incident occurred and allegedly failed to call 911 after the child was shot.

An investigation indicated that the shooting likely unfolded more than an hour before police were called and the first 911 call made to officers was by the victim’s mother from the hospital.

Officers said while being questioned, Denise Hudson was briefly hospitalized after she experienced illness and shortness of breath. After receiving care, she was taken into custody.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact the Joliet Police Department Investigation Division at 815-724-3020 or Will County Crime Stoppers at 800-323-6734 to remain anonymous.
