(KRON) — A man who was walking his dog in a San Leandro neighborhood was shot and killed earlier this month. On Friday, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Coroner’s Bureau identified the victim as Ryan M. Christie, 47, of San Leandro.
Christie was walking his dog on the morning of June 14 along Euclid Avenue near East 14th Street when he was shot in the back, according to the San Leandro Police Department. Officers found him unresponsive on the sidewalk just before 8:30 a.m. with the dog still leashed to his hand.
Christie was pronounced deceased at the scene. The dog was not injured.
Following the homicide, SLPD Lieutenant Abe Teng told KRON4 that investigators were speaking to neighbors and gathering security video in an effort to identify Christie’s killer.
“From all appearances it appeared that he was just out walking the dog,” Teng said at the time. “Of course, our investigators are still piecing together everything.”
As of Friday, no further developments in the homicide investigation have been released to the public. It is the first homicide the city has seen in 2025.
People who work and live nearby said they’ve seen unhoused people hanging around the area, but never violent crime like this.
“This is a really, really quiet neighborhood,” Liliana Honorato, a resident of the area, told KRON4. “Nothing happened like this before.”
Authorities said there is no indication that there is an ongoing threat to the community.
