(KRON) — Investigators uncovered more than 1,500 units of illegal fireworks, including professional-grade explosives, at a storage facility in Alameda, announced the Alameda Police Department on Thursday.
APD said a tip about illegal storage and sales led them to the huge discovery just ahead of the July 4th holiday. Fireworks are banned in the City of Alameda.
“The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad was called in to safely remove and transport the material for destruction,” said Alameda PD. “The bomb squad has confirmed this is the largest illegal firework seizure in Alameda County so far this year.”
Police did not release details about suspects arrested and any charges they face. The total value of the seized fireworks was also not yet provided.
Officials remind fireworks lovers that several cities in the Bay Area, including San Francisco, Sausalito, Antioch, Benicia, Concord, Moraga, San Jose and Redwood City, will host professional fireworks shows in the coming weeks.
“Please celebrate safely by leaving the fireworks to the professionals,” wrote APD in a social media post.
