LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) has issued a new warning Thursday about text scams claiming to be from the agency.
This is the second time in June that the DFA has warned about these scams; the first warning was given on June 6.
The scam is an official-looking text message, purportedly from the Arkansas Department of Motor Vehicles, telling the recipient they have an overdue traffic ticket. If they do not pay right away, the text continues, the recipient will have their license suspended and face “further legal disputes.”
The message includes a link for the recipient to pay the overdue fine. This link is not to an Arkansas.gov website.
DFA spokesperson Scott Hardin pointed out that the DFA, including its Motor Vehicle Division, does not send texts regarding traffic tickets.
“This is a revised version of the scam text that has been circulating for the past two months,” Hardin said. “It is another attempt to steal your financial information, suggesting the state government will cancel your vehicle registration and driving privileges if you don’t pay.”
