WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin is calling on her party to sharpen its message and reclaim its identity as the defender of working-class Americans.
In a speech at the Center for American Progress on Wednesday, Slotkin urged Democrats to refocus on economic fairness, national security, and pushing back against extremism.
“The middle class doesn’t have a lobbyist. They don’t have a super PAC or a corporate PAC—but they should have the Democratic Party,” Slotkin said.
The senator outlined what she described as a “new vision” for the Democratic Party, one centered on supporting families, rebuilding trust in democratic institutions, and ensuring that a single job can provide stability and dignity.
“We need an economy where every American can do one job full time, with good benefits, and live a stable life,” she added.
Her remarks come as Democrats are working to regroup ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, seeking to draw a clear contrast with Republicans, who have unified behind President Trump’s sweeping legislative proposal.
Meanwhile, the White House took aim at the party’s left wing, criticizing the primary victory of Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral race.
“The victory of the Democratic primary candidate really shows how far left and unhinged the Democrat Party has become,“ said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
On Capitol Hill, Republicans say they’re focused on delivering results for voters. Representative Rudy Yakym (R-Ind.) called President Trump’s proposed legislation, dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” the most “pro-American, pro-worker, pro-family bill in generations.”
Senate leaders are aiming to bring the bill to a vote before the end of the week.
