Quawan Charles’ family calls for new investigation, organizes protest in response to video uncovered by KLFY

BALDWIN, La. (KLFY) — There are new developments in the mysterious death of 15-year-old Quawan Charles from Baldwin, who was found dead in a sugarcane field ditch in Loreauville in November of 2020 after being reported missing by family members.

A family member is demanding a new investigation after KLFY uncovered shocking, new video as part of our investigation into Quawan’s death.

In the weeks following Quawan’s death and amid the homicide investigation into his death, Iberia Parish Sheriff Tommy Romero released a statement.

“We have spoken with at least one eyewitness who reportedly saw Quawan ‘Bobby’ Charles before his death in the area near where he was later found deceased,” A part of the sheriff’s statement read. “We have obtained and reviewed video evidence showing Quawan ‘Bobby’ Charles near that area. Video evidence indicates no other individuals present with Quawan ‘Bobby’ Charles or anyone else present for some time before, or after, he is seen on the recording.”

When KLFY anchor Britt Lofaso began looking into Quawan’s death again for her new show, Cajun Case Files, she requested this video:

After four months of back-and-forth with the sheriff’s office, IPSO released the video.

The video, taken from surveillance video from an event center, shows a person sprinting behind a line of trees towards the area where Quawan was later found dead.

After seeing the video, Quawan Charles’ cousin, Celina Charles, says the video does not support what law enforcement claimed.

“The footage directly contradicts public statements made by Sheriff Tommy Romero since 2020 and confirms years of deception toward the family and public,” Celina said in a statement.

Celina, who operates the civil rights organization Purposed for the People, is demanding “a full release of all video and investigative materials withheld from the family and the public, a federal civil rights investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice, and immediate action from the Louisiana Attorney General to reopen and properly prosecute this case.”

Celina tells News 10 there will be a protest on Saturday, June 28, at 4 p.m. in front of the Iberia Parish courthouse.

You can watch KLFY’S entire investigation into Quawan’s death on a KLFY Plus exclusive show, Cajun Case Files. KLFY Plus is a streaming app available on all smart TVs.
