PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Dozens of shelter pets from the Los Angeles area that were displaced due to devastating wildfires earlier this year arrived in Portland on Wednesday in hopes of finding new homes.
More than 125 shelter pets touched down by plane at Portland International Airport thanks to a collaborative effort between multiple animal welfare organizations.
Shelters in the greater LA area have been reaching capacity in the aftermath of the wildfires. Portland is taking some of the load, clearing up needed space for the shelters and allowing them to avoid putting the animals down.
The hope is that aspiring pet parents in Portland will adopt them.
“I think this whole situation is a great example of how animal welfare organizations work together to truly save lives,” said Laura Klink with the Oregon Humane Society.
The effort was also made possible in part thanks to Greater Good Charities, a global non-profit organization helping Los Angeles shelters after the wildfires.
