HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — The State Museum of Pennsylvania announced that it will be closing for nearly three years starting in 2026.
The Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC) announced it will invest $55 million in infrastructure revitalization at the State Museum of Pennsylvania’s mid-century modern building, located at 300 North Street
Officials say the project will help meet the expectations of 21st-century visitors and offer new, dynamic experiences while also focusing on stewardship and providing first-class collections storage areas for the Museum’s most sensitive collections.
The museum says this will be the largest and most comprehensive upgrade to the complex since the facility opened in 1964.
The project is expected to begin in the spring of 2026.
The State Museum of Pennsylvania will remain open through July 2026 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The Museum will then be closed from August 2026 until early 2029.
The PHMC says it also unveiled a new state-of-the-art Pennsylvania State Archives building in December 2023.
