Pennsylvania girl makes prom dress out of 31 tape rolls, is contest finalist

(WHTM) — Some teens spend a lot of time finding the perfect prom dress. What about spending the equivalent of a week making your own… out of tape.

That’s what one Pennsylvania gal did as part of a contest hosted by Duck Tape, appropriately dubbed “Stuck at Prom.”

Emmalynn Holland, of Glenmoore, about 30 miles east of Lancaster, spent 176 hours making her neon pink dress out of 31 rolls of Duck Tape.

Her work earned her a spot as one of five prom dress finalists.

In her entry, Holland says she initially hated the color pink and the idea of princesses and “that I was meant to be the one rescued.”

“I wanted to be different, a feminist, someone who didn’t need sparkles to feel strong,” Holland writes. “What I didn’t realize was that by pushing away anything ‘girly,’ I was buying into the idea that femininity was weak.”

“After years of self-discovery, I’ve embraced the part of me that really does love pink—and even wants to be a princess,” she continued. “My dress reflects that transformation.”

The dress, she says, also incorporates her Christian faith with Psalm 23. All 122 words of the passage are featured via Duck Tape on the front layers.

In the contest, a Grand Prize winner will be chosen via online vote in both the dress and tuxedo categories. That winner will get a $15,000 cash scholarship.

All runners-up will get $1,000 and a Duck brand prize pack worth $100. Three will also be chosen for a Judge’s Choice award worth $1,000.
