TOPEKA (KSNT) – Kansas transportation officials will be closing part of I-70 in downtown Topeka this weekend for work on the ongoing Polk-Quincy Viaduct project.
Kate Craft with the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) said in a press release on June 26 that workers will be closing westbound I-70 in Topeka starting at 7 a.m. on Saturday, June 28 for lane shift and traffic control readjustments. KDOT plans to reopen the highway at 4 p.m. later that same day.
Craft said the 10th Avenue exit will be the last open exit for westbound travelers on the highway. Traffic is encouraged to follow a detour route going south to I-470 or north to U.S. 75 Highway and on to K-4 Highway. A local street detour will also be available from 10th Avenue to Topeka Boulevard, then to Sixth Avenue and onto MacVicar Avenue before heading back onto I-70.
Drivers will still be able to use the First Street on-ramp to westbound I-70 during this closure. Workers may close I-70 in the coming days as further patching work may be required on the viaduct.
