CHICAGO — Commuters on the Kennedy Expressway have faced major delays early Thursday morning after a fatal crash late Wednesday night in which a refrigerated semi-truck carrying meat rolled over near Belmont Avenue.

The truck was heading inbound on the Kennedy Expressway when it rolled over the divider between the inbound local lanes and the outbound express lanes just after 11:30 p.m., Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Transportation say. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

ISP confirmed early Thursday morning the driver of the truck was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The outbound express lanes and two local inbound lanes on the Kennedy Expressway were closed early Thursday morning as commuter traffic began to pick. According to ISP, all lanes were reopened as of approximately 6:30 a.m.

However, travel from downtown Chicago to O’Hare International Airport via the Kennedy Expressway was still taking drivers about 2 hours, 20 minutes as of around 7:15 a.m.
